Roland Cabon a été initié très jeune
à la prise de vue et au laboratoire noir et blanc par
son père. Après des études en photographie
à Paris (ÉFET 1974-75), il se lance dans le métier
en se spécialisant dans la photo d'architecture et de
décoration. Tout en continuant son métier de photographe,
il arrive au graphisme par logique : selon lui, la photo et
la mise en page ne font qu'un surtout depuis l'avènement
de l'infographie et de la retouche d'image sur ordinateur. De
studios en agences de publicité (Paris, Aix-en-Provence
et Montréal), il se définit comme photographiste.
Directeur artistique, journaliste, puis, rédacteur
en chef, Roland Cabon tenait à renouer discrètement
et humblement avec la photographie, son premier métier,
tout en continuant l'écriture journalistique et la
consultation. L'idée d'un pseudonyme germa et Roland
Cabon vit le jour en 2001.
C'est grâce à ses séries
d'études sur le nu, que Roland Cabon recommence à
travailler sérieusement la photo. Véritable
retour aux sources pour lui, ces images devaient être
aussi un retour à la simplicité. Ici, pas d'artifices
inutiles et souvent dérangeants ni d'effets spéciaux
à l'ordinateur, juste la beauté sans fard se
voulant être un hommage au corps féminin habillé
simplement d'ombres et de lumières. L'influence du
graphisme est perceptible dans chacune de ses compositions
non recadrées ultérieurement et souvent travaillées
d'après des croquis originaux.
Que ce soient des portraits, des photos de
nu, de nature ou d'architecture, toutes les images de Roland
Cabon sont réalisées avec la même démarche
graphique et le même souci de la composition.

Roland Cabon was introduced at a very early age to the joys
of photography and of black and white print development by his
father. After having completed his studies in photography in
Paris (ÉFET 1974-75), he took it up as a career, specializing
in shooting architectural structures and decoration objects.
Photography eventually led him to another field, that of graphic
arts. To him, it was a logical and natural occurrence because,
in his opinion, photography and page layout are one of the same
specially with the advent of computer graphic design and of
computerized image touch-ups. Collaborating over the years with
photography and design studios as well as advertising agencies
in Paris, Aix-en-Provence and Montreal, he describes himself
as being a photographiste.
From art director to journalist to editor-in-chief, Roland
Cabon always used photography, his first trade, as a direct
source for his writing and consulting assignments. The idea
of a pen name emerged and Roland Cabon came into being in
2001.
His series of nudes inspired Roland Cabon to make a serious
come-back to photography. To him, it was a journey back to
the strict basics; the images evoking the return to sheer
simplicity: no futile devices nor computer-generated special
effects - just beauty without any pretence, honouring the
female body adorned simply by light and shadow. His experience
as a graphic artist is perceived in the studied framing of
each one of his compositions which are often reproduced from
his own original sketches.
From portraits to nudes to architectural or environmental
photography - all images captured by Roland Cabon are products
of his special graphic approach to his art and of his appreciation
of unique compositions.
